Haunted Manor 幽霊屋敷

"Haunted Manor" is a Polish opera by Sanislaw Moniuzko.  It was written in 1861-1864 when Russia controlled most of Poland.  The story depicts the life and the values of the respected class of soldiers in Poland at the time.  It is one of the most popular operas in Poland, but is little known outside the country.

I had a chance to hear the opera presented in a concert format as the choir my sister takes part in was part of the production last Sunday.  It was the first time the the work was to be presented in Polish in Japan.  Singers had to spend a lot of time learning to sing in the unfamiliar language.

Many people showed up to the hall in the suburbs of Tokyo maybe because they were interested in this rare opportunity to hear this opera.

I'm not a great opera fan, and have seen only a few operas in my life.  I didn't have much expectation with this opera because so little is known about the work.  But as it turned out, it was very enjoyable work, both in terms of story and music.  I would love to see and hear this work with costumes and all some day.

One of many Polish among the audience who was sitting near us was apparently enjoying the opera very much.  She was singing along some of the arias, which showed that this is truly a very popular opera in Poland.

I don't imagine that there will be many occasions for "Haunted Manor" to be put on stage anywhere in the world except Poland.  But if you have a chance, I recommend to hear it.

「幽霊屋敷」はポーランドの作曲家、スタニスワフ・モニューシュコが1861年~1864年に書いたオペラである。当時ポーランドは、ロシア、プロイセン、オーストリアの分割統治下にあり、この作品も上演までに何度もロシア当局の検閲を受けた挙句、「士族」の暮らしを通して愛国心や勇気を強く感じさせる内容があまりにも観衆を熱狂させたため、3回の上演で舞台から下ろされてしまったという。（プログラムより）

2月24日、姉が活動している合唱団がこの作品の本邦初ポーランド語での上演（コンサート形式）に参加するというので、はるばる立川まで見に行った。

私はオペラファンではないし、今まで見たオペラも数えるほど。ましてや今回の作品はあまり知られていない作品だし、正直余り期待はしていなかった。
この珍しい機会を逃すまいとした人が多かったのか、会場は満席に近い盛況だった。ポーランド人の姿もそこここに。なんだかみんな、ワクワクしている様子。なんでもポーランドで一番人気のあるオペラだとか。そうなのか。

実際に聞いてみると、これはなかなか優れた作品だった。（えらそーに言う）
ストーリーも面白かったし、音楽もよく構成されていた。
ポーランド語での演奏で、出演者は本当に大変だっただろうと思うけれど、感情表現も豊かで聞きごたえがあった。歌詞にはけっこう聖書や信仰生活を下敷きにしたことばが使われていたのだけど、「神の存在を感じて暮らしている人の台詞」であるために歌手の人たちも感情移入しやすかったのか、深いよい表現になっていた気がする。これがいわゆる宗教曲の場合だと、信徒でない人が歌っているとどうもしっくり来ないことが多いのだ。そういうところでも、今回は聞きやすい公演だった。

私たちの前の列にいたポーランド人の女性が終始ノリノリで楽しそうに聞いていて、アリア（バリトンなのに）を一緒に歌っているのを見て、ああ、この作品が国民的作品だというのは本当だったのだ、と印象付けられた。

ポーランド以外ではめったに演奏されることのないであろうこの作品、いつか演奏会形式でなくオペラで見てみたいものだ、と思う。
