Seamount 海山

I got an e-mail from my brother-in-law last week, saying that the Japan Coast Guard notified him that a newly found seamount north of Minami Torishima Island, which is the southernmost island of Japan, has been named after my father.  Well, it's not his full name, but only his last name, so the sea mout has got my maiden name.

Dad ran an oceanographic instrument maker that was founded by my grandfather and is now run by my brother-in-law.  The Japan Coast Guard was one of the firm's main customers.  My father was not a scholar or inventor himself, but he took part in various oceanology-related societies, and apparently was intent on meeting customers' requests in providing instruments.  I suspect somebody who knew my father's years of contribution to the field happened to be in the right position now, and took the oppportunity to name this seamount after him. 
It's very fortunate, and is a great honor especially after hearing that this is the first --- and probably the last--- case that the name of someone who's not a scholar has been chosen.

Dad only had us three daughters and no son.  My elder sister and I got married and took our husband's name, and my younger sister is not married with no child.  So, I was thinking that our family name will be lost after our generation.   But now I know that Dad's name will live with a mountain standing in deep waters in the Pacific.  It gives me a relief and a sense of happiness.

先日義兄からメールが来た。
海上保安庁から連絡があり、調査業務の一環で南鳥島北部で発見した海山に父の名前がつくことが決まった、ということだった。今後海底地形の名称を検討する海外で開催される委員会で決議されれば、国際的に承認される運びとなる、とのこと。

父は去年亡くなるまで、祖父が興し今は義兄が継いでいる海洋測器メーカーを経営していて、海上保安庁はじめ海洋調査に関わる内外の様々な機関を顧客としていた。父自身は学者でも発明家でもなかったものの、いくつもの学会に顔を出し、調査研究に携わる人たちが何を求めているかを知り、人々を結びつけ、機器を提供することでこの分野に貢献しようと努めてきたのだと思う。
海山に学者や機関ではなく一般人の名前が付くというのは、父が初めてで、おそらく最後だろうという話で、そうなったのも、父のこれまでの努力を知る人がいまそういうポジションにいてくれたというタイミングだったのではないか、と想像するのだが、背景がどうあれ喜ばしいことに変わりはない。

最近なにかにつけ「レガシー」ということが言われるけれど、人がそこにいた証としてもっともわかりやすいのは子どもだと思う。父には姉妹しかおらず、自分の子どもも私たち姉妹だけなので、残念ながら父の名もこの代で終わり、と思っていたけれど、海山命名のおかげで遠い南の海の底ではあるけれど、これからも生き続けることになり、ちょっとホッとして、嬉しく誇らしいニュースだった。
