知らなんだ Je ne savais pas.

クルマで移動中、もうすぐスペイン語講座が始まるからとNHK第二をつけたら
フランス語講座をやっていた。私が辛うじてそこまでは勉強した複合過去がテーマ。
練習問題をやってみたけど、先にスペイン語が出てしまい、
5問中4問目になってやっとスムーズに答えられる始末。ああ、忘れてるなあ。

そのあと講師の先生が「先ほどJ'aime la France という表現がありましたが・・・」
と次のような説明をした。

私はフランスが好きです J'aime la France.  
を強調して「大好きです」としたければ beaucoup や bien を付けて
J'aime la France beauscoup. J'aime la France bien.　で良い。

同じaimerという動詞を使って、
英語の I love you. に当たる　Je t'aime.
という表現があるが、これに beaucoup や bien を付けると
強調にはならずに、却ってその度合いを薄める意味になってしまう
ので注意が必要、とのこと。

ええっ？そうなの？

「とても愛しています」と、言ったつもりが、「いい人ね」になってしまうなんて。。。
知らなんだ。
フランス語で愛を語ろうとしているそこのアナタ、気をつけてね。

I was going to write about a different subject today,
but I just heard something that surprised me on my car radio, so I'll write about it.

It came during a French language lesson program that I happened to hear on my car radio.(I took some French in high school and college though most of it is gone now.)
They talked about the verb 'aimer'=to love and adverb to emphasize it 'beaucoup'=very much and 'bien'=well.

When you want to say, "I love France very much.", you can say, "J'aime la France beaucoup."or "J'aime la France bien." 

Now, you may know that in Franch, you say, "Je t'aime." to say, "I love you."
And you might want to say, "I love you very much." but you shouldn't say, "Je t'aime beaucoup." because, the teacher said, it would WEAKEN, rather than emphasize, the meaning of "aimer"!
You may end up saying, "you are very nice" when you think you are saying "I love you very much."  So be careful, if you're talking love in French.
